World number one Jason Day cemented his place on top of the world with a wire-to-wire victory at the 2016 Players Championship.

Day’s tournament opened with a course record tying 63 on Friday, before a 6-under par 66 set a new 36-hole scoring record and gave the Australian a commanding lead going into the weekend. Rounds of 73 and 71 were enough to secure a four-shot victory as conditions toughened.

“I’ve never been more motivated to be number one in the world,” said Day, whose win was his seventh in 17 starts. “All the hard work that I’ve put into my game right now has paid off, but I’ve got to keep working hard to win as much as I can.

“At the end of the day, it’s very stressful being the number one player in the world. You’re in the limelight a lot. You’ve got more things to do when you get to tournaments, more things to do off weeks. But I wouldn’t change it in any way because this is exactly where I want to be, and I want to try and stay here as long as I can while I can, because nothing beats this feeling.”
