Sergio Garcia breaks all-time Ryder Cup points record

Sergio Garcia became the highest Ryder Cup points scorer in history with victory in the singles during the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National

Sergio Garcia started the week on 22.5 points, but by Sunday secured his named in the history books after surpassing Sir Nick Faldo’s previous record of 25 points with victory in three of his four matches. 

The 2017 Masters Champion, who was a much-debated about Captain’s pick for this year’s contest after a difficult year on the golf course, proved the doubters wrong on three separate occasions in this year’s Ryder Cup.

His first point came alongside Alex Noren in the foursomes on Friday, cruising to 7Up by the turn and defeating Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau 5&4 on Europe’s way to their first ever whitewash in a foursomes session.

Garcia would keep the momentum going during a 2&1 fourball victory with Rory McIlroy over Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau on Saturday morning, before his first loss of the event came with Noren on Saturday afternoon.

During his singles matches against Fowler, Garcia moved ahead with a birdie on the first and stayed up the entire day. Heading down the 17th dormie, both Garcia and Fowler parred the hole to end the match 2&1, a victory that moved Europe to 15.5 points and put Garcia’s name straight to the top of the historic points list. 

An emotional Garica was asked what it meant to him to pass Faldo’s record, and he admitted it’s something he never thought would happen.

“it means a lot,” Garcia said, “but at the end of the day, I’ve always said it. It’s about the team and I’m happy that I was able to help. I’m happy that I was able to help with some of the points.

“It’s a bonus. It’s something that I never thought I would have the possibility of doing it, and now that it’s happened, you know, I’m just so happy. I mean, these guys are unbelievable.”

Europe completed their first ever whitewash (4-0-0) in a foursomes session, claiming all four matches and setting the tone for the rest of the contest.
