2019 Masters Par-3 Contest: What you need to know

What is the Masters Par-3 Contest?

The Masters Par 3 Contest is an optional event for competitors, non-competing past champions and honorary invitees that is held on the Wednesday of Masters week. It’s a fun event where players will often invite family, friends or celebrities to be their caddies for the day.

The winner of the contest receives a crystal bowl, and those closest to the pin on each hole receive prizes.

It is played on the Par-3 Course, which was built in 1958 – two years before the first Par-3 Contest was held in 1960. Two holes were added over Ike’s Pond in the 1980s, with the original first two holes being turned into spectator seating.

In the history of the contest, it has only been cancelled once due to bad weather, which was in 2017.

What is the Masters Par-3 Curse?

No player has won the Masters and the Par-3 contest in the same year, and for that reason it has for some time been referred to as the par-3 curse.

It means that a lot of players don’t take it that seriously, and are happy to DQ themselves by letting their caddies take shots for them.

Some caddies just take shots of their own off the tees: last year, Jack Nicklaus’ grandson made his first hole in one doing just that.
