Houston Open: Betting Tips, TV Times

Find out how to watch and who to back at this week’s Houston Open

The Houston Open returns with a new spot in the PGA Tour schedule this week, having been missed out in the 2018/19 season, changing from it’s regular pre-Masters place to fifth in the new PGA Tour calendar.

Ian Poulter claimed the title here when it was played in 2018, but he’s teeing up at the Italian Open on the European Tour this week so won’t be back to defend his title.

Fellow Ryder Cup teammate Henrik Stenson will be part of the field though, entering as the highest ranked player at World No.37, and is joined by former champions Russell Henley, Matt Jones, Jim Herman and D.A. Points.

• Date: 10-13 October
• Course: GC of Houston
• Prize Fund: $7,500,000
• FedEx Cup Points: 500

Betting Tips: Houston Open

Henrik Stenson: 9/1
It’s unsurprising that Stenson is the unequivocal favourite this week following his T17 at the BMW PGA Championship. He has only finished outside the top 30 three times in his last 14 starts worldwide, which includes top 10s at the US Open, Scottish Open, RBC Canadian Open and Scandinavian Invitation. He was also T6 here last year, and the runner-up in 2016. Ranked 1st SG: Approach and 5th driving accuracy on the PGA Tour last season.

Brian Harman: 22/1
Harman has played three out of four tournaments on the new season, recording a 3rd place finish at The Greenbrier before a T14 and T18 at the Sanderson Farms and last week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open respectively. Ranks 3rd scoring average so far this season, 11th SG: Putting, 14th Birdie average and 18th SG: Tee to green. Only drawback is Houston Open performance, his best a T52 in six starts.

Russell Henley: 25/1
This week’s horse for the course has a victory (’16) and four other top 10s at the Houston Open in his last five starts. Finished 2nd after a string of missed cuts at the John Deere Classic in July, but his best result of the new season so far is a T37 last week. Ranks 7th SG: Around the green, 16th GIR, and inside the top 30 on the PGA Tour this season for SG: Tee to green and SG: Approach.

Daniel Berger: 22/1
Two top 10s and no worse than a T25 in four Houston Open starts. Ranked 33rd last season for scoring average, and has gone T23-T18 in his first two events of the new season.

Scottie Scheffler: 30/1
Finished T76 last week but before that won the KFT’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, followed by a T11, two T7s and a T16 –the latter two in his first two starts on the new PGA Tour season. Making his debut at the Houston Open this week. Currently ranks 1st SG: Tee to green, 2nd for both GIR and birdie average, 4th SG: Approach, 7th Scoring average and 12th for driving accuracy.

Denny McCarthy: 33/1
A player on form, who started this new season with a T31 at The Greenbrier, followed by a T18 at the Sanderson Farms and T9 at last week’s Shriners. T43 on his debut here last year. Ranks 2nd SG: Putting, 14th for birdies on the PGA Tour.

Harris English: 40/1
Back-to-back top 10s to start this season followed by a T33 at the Safeway Open two weeks ago. Hasn’t typically performed well here, but did finish T18 in 2012. Ranks inside the top 10 so far this season for scoring average, birdie average, driving accuracy, GIR and SG: putting

Lanto Griffin: 60/1

After gaining his card through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals (and a T7 at the KFT Championship), Griffin has had four consecutive top 20s on the PGA Tour – the only player to do so – so he’ll be confident despite a MC on his debut here last year. Ranks 14th scoring average.
