LIV Golf reveals $405m global league for 2023, including promotion and relegation

The LIV Golf Invitational Series will become the LIV Golf league in 2023, with the same 48 players competing in 14 events across the world as part of 12 established teams.
LIV will add events in Latin America, Australia and Asia, while changes to their format will also see players compete in International Series events on the Asian Tour, where they will be eligible for Official World Golf Ranking points.
Originally planned for 2024, LIV’s launch has proved so successful that they have moved the league plan forwards by a year.
The full schedule of events will be announced at a later date and is expected to expand LIV across a host of new territories, with at least one event being played in England.

LIV will also continue its enhancement of player pathways through the International Series, a series of events launched this year through a $300 million commitment to the Asian Tour.
In the new league format, players are expected to compete in numerous International Series tournaments, bringing the world’s top players to locations such as Thailand, England, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, as well as new locations across the Americas and Europe.
Tournaments will be broadcast across the globe, with LIV delivering a total of 25 tournaments worldwide in 2023.

Consistent with the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, the LIV Golf League will showcase its innovative new golf format featuring simultaneous team and individual play with athletes competing for an unprecedented $405 million in prize purses.
As a result, players will consistently play head-to-head against their rivals throughout the year, providing fans with a unique experience.
Each season will culminate in a Team World Championship match play grand finale, and LIV say the 2023 league schedule will not compete with the Majors, international team events or heritage events, meaning the players will be available if permitted.
LIV have placed team golf, which has proven it has the ability to produce many of the game’s most exciting moments, at the heart of the new structure.

As we reported earlier this week, each team will be led by one established captain and will follow a franchise model akin to other sports. The captains will compete and have the ability to build their franchises as they see fit in an effort to gain the greatest fan following and sponsor interest.
We believe captains will also be given 25% ownership of their team and if they grow it into a franchise that’s worth $500m or %1bn, then they and the principal players on that team will all own a quarter of it.
LIV Golf League will guarantee open competition with opportunities for promotions and relegations through the LIV Golf International Series, annually delivering new opportunities for international golfers, as well as pathways for amateurs and the next generation of leading players into elite professional golf.
This format provides broad exemption categories so a wide spectrum of players can attempt to earn their way into the league. In addition, an end-of-season LIV Golf Promotions event will provide further opportunities for new talent to enter the league at the expense of those who haven’t performed as well during the season.
However, we understand that certain players who have signed long-term deals with LIV, will be exempt from the relegation.
The third event in the LIV Golf Invitational Series arrives at Trump National Bedminster this week with Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson among those making their debuts.
