Generating spin

Creating backspin isn’t all about hitting down on the ball as steeply as you can. Whilst it is important to deliver adownward blow to the ball, the key to creating spin is to maintain the loft on the clubface. Combine that with a downward hit and you’ve got the perfect recipe for spinning chip shots.

Imagine a back-spinning tennis or table tennis shot. You hit down to create the spin but keep loft on the face to get the ball over the net. The same theory applies to golf.

As Andrew Murray explains in this golf video tip, holding loft on the club into the finish with the clubface pointing more up to the sky is a good checkpoint to tick off if you want your chips to check up more. Discover his other pointers below.
