Hybrids: One club, five shots – Punching out of trees

4. Punching out of trees

You’re in the trees and faced with a tough shot. Your back or throughswing is hindered and there are overhanging branches ahead of you. With low loft and hot face materials, utility clubs are perfect for getting you out of trouble – keeping the ball low and achieving good distances. Just make sure you set up correctly and commit fully to the shot.

Aim left of your target, keeping the face square and turning hard through the ball to keep it going towards the target. The length of the shaft means that, if you don’t do this, you’re sure to go right.

Keep the ball down by moving the ball back in your stance. It promotes a downward attack with a delofted face. Don’t go too far, but the ball should be back of centre. Make sure you turn through as failure to do so will see the ball go high and right.
