Master the running chip

When faced with a chip shot up a steep slope in front of the green or to a flag that is located at the back of the green, we need to get the ball running when it land. For this to happen, we need to reduce the amount of spin we generate and that can be difficult because our wedges naturally create a lot of backspin.

To get the ball running, feel like you hit the ball with draw spin by rolling the clubface over through to the finish position. Release the club down the target line with the toe pointing more up to the sky in the finish position, as Andrew Murray explains in this video tip.

The releasing chip shot tends to have a longer finish because of the ‘release’ of the club – the clubface is attacking the ball with less loft, much more like a topspin tennis shot, and therefore moves more into a full finish as a result.
