Put Ferndown, host of the 1989 Women’s Open, in the middle of the Surrey sandbelt and you could well be paying double the price. Dorset’s premier course is a fine heathland which is dominated by pine trees in a secluded spot north of Bournemouth. Peter Alliss learnt the game here; his father was the pro for over two decades.
