Cobra BiO CELL

Irons Test 2014: Cobra BiO CELL – BRONZE AWARD

Cost: £549 steel £649 graphite

Tech: Featuring four pockets or ‘cells’ in the back cavity. The long irons use tungsten weights in the heel and toe pockets to raise MOI and performance on mishits. The 8-iron to PW has the tungsten in the two centre pockets for better feel and control. Perimeter undercut creates more face flex at impact for more ball speed.

What we said… James Ridyard: “Looks more similar to BiO CELL+ than I thought it would, just with a slightly thicker top edge and white score line on its lowest groove. It felt pretty hot, was easy to launch high and when struck well it felt hard to miss and the numbers backed this up. It scored maximum points on distance and dispersion for me. The stock shaft performed well too. I actually prefer this to + version.” Joel Tadman: “It’s inviting to hit. Despite being long from heel-to-toe the topline appears relatively thin due to bevelled edging. I achieved some of my fastest club speeds which translated into distance.” Gee Gioia: “A really strong, mid trajectory felt easy to get consistently. The matt finish on the grooved area makes it simple to set up to the ball. One of my favourites in the category.” Adam Holdgate: “The feel was very impressive, it really flew when you nailed it. Shorter irons lacked forgiveness but the overall look inspires confidence.”

Pros: Long face combined with slim topline was popular. All testers noted a hot feel and bundles of forgiveness in the long irons especially.

Cons: Back of the head may be practical, but it looks far too busy.

The numbers: Looks: 8 Feel: 9 Forgiveness: 8.5 Workability: 8 Distance Consistency: 9.5 Dispersion: 9
