Scotland, Cheshire, Somerset, Hampshire and Surrey provide this week’s 2-FORE!-1 six of the best venues – courses which belong to the biggest, best and brightest discounted green fees scheme in golf and provide quality golf for a quality price.
*Old Thorns, Hampshire – Any course that was designed by Peter Alliss simply has to be taken seriously, and this track provides the perfect test for golfers – whether they are single-figure or 20+ handicappers looking to improve their games.
Set among rolling hills, the course features attractive views at every turn. With various water hazards, mature trees and wickedly-placed bunkers, Old Thorns should be on every golfer’s must-play list. The excellent drainage ensures year-round enjoyment, and the greens remain true whatever time of the year.
*Lingfield Park, Surrey – this venue is best known for horse racing though the on-site golf course, plotted amidst 200 acres of breathtaking Surrey parkland, is well worth checking out too.
*Oake Manor, Somerset – Well-established American-style parkland course with a series of lakes, waterfalls and trout stream running through it.
*Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway – Short and sweet sums up ultra-scenic Moffat which sits in the heart of the southern uplands in Scottish border country.
*Wychwood Park, Cheshire – A golfing paradise, Wychwood is the home of a quality open parkland layout supported by a luxury on-site De Vere hotel.
The course has hosted the first stages of European Tour qualifying and provides a major all-round challenge and though the fairways are fairly generous, the rough can be pretty high in the summer. You particularly need to be on your guard at the monster 484-yards par-4 4th and the 188-yards par-3 penultimate hole dominated by water.
A fine example of a modern track with the tees and greens constructed to USGA-spec.
*Traditions, Surrey – 1999 Peter Alliss design and well worth taking the 10mins detour from junction 10 of the M25. But make sure you take plenty of balls as you need to negotiate several water hazards.
