The Open in July demonstrated why this is also a brilliant course. One day, with the conditions as benign as anyone could remember on an opening day, Rory McIlroy ripped it apart. The next day, Mother Nature came to the aid of the Old Lady and the Boy Wonder was savaged. The charm of the course isn’t always noticeable the first time you play it, but eventually the Swilcan Burn, the Road Hole, Elysian Fields, Hell Bunker wear even the coldest heart down. It has so more than just history to offer.
