Course Description

Most new golf clubs nowadays have a standard formula; take 100 acres of land, borrow £1 million, frantic earthmoving activity for 2 years, then open the course. To pay for the expense charge Entry Fees of £500+, Annual Membership Fees £700+, Green Fees £18 - £30.

This wasn't always the way. Golf clubs traditionally grew slowly as funds allowed, with the help of local enthusiasts who had a real sense of ownership and involvement. Such is Epping Golf Course.

Garage Owner Peter Sjoberg (PMW) bought the land on the southern edge of Epping Town and designed the holes in the early 90's. His brother Neil, who had previously built simple courses for the YMCA, prepared the planning application and organised the volunteers. Under the watchful eye of father Charles Sjoberg (now sadly deceased), the wider Sjoberg family (who have a history of low handicap golfers based around West Essex Golf Club) have all contributed.

Each development stage has funded the next with the help of enthusiastic volunteers. The result is an exceptionally friendly venue with very low cost golf (see Green Fees) and high quality greens and fairways. The latest major project is the new clubhouse, which commenced in March 2002 and opened at the end of 2003.

Epping Golf Course

An interesting course not least because it is shorter off the yellow tees than the red. The welcome was second to none and the friendly atmosphere was mirrored by the members we met. The only down side was the lack of changing facilities for visitors but all in all an really enjoyable test.

Nearly perfect

I love playing at Epping Golf Club. Apart from being down the road you get great value for just £12 mon-Fri. For a small establishment, as golf clubs go, this course is fantastic for any level golfer who just enjoys the game. Unless you drive 250 yd every time, very few greens are reachable in one of the yellows, meaning the game requires just as much concentration as... read more

Epping Golf Course

The welcome at Epping is very friendly and a round is very reasonably priced. The staff have worked extremely hard in recent times and the Tees and Greens have come on leaps and bounds. This isn't the longest course out there and big hitters may find it more useful to leave the driver in the car, but the undulating fairways still provide a good test and make you think about where to (try to) land... read more
