How we chose the Best Golf Society Venues in the UK

The new lists are by some distance the hardest to do, especially when they cover areas or themes that I’m unfamiliar with. This one falls into that category and I am grateful for everyone who has assisted.

We judged the clubs on the course’s overall quality, the course’s playability for all levels, the club’s service, and the value of their packages – and all panelists nominated venues that they rated and expanded with their reasons.

Many of our existing panelists had their say, with special thanks to William Murphy and Dave Parker, and I am especially indebted to The Social Golfer, Golf Society of Great Britain, and the International Golf Club for their insight.

The Social Golfer

Golf Society of Great Britain

Founded in 1955, GSGB organizes five home-based events each year and two overseas tours. The 36-hole Stableford events visit many of Britain’s best courses and are very popular with male and female players of all standards. International Golf Club

Created because founder Peter Phillips “wanted all my events to be special, not just another round of golf”, IGC London is one of the premier golf societies in the country. You don’t have to be an IGC member to sign up, but if you are, you get discounted rates at each event and can sign in guests at the member’s rate too. Everyone is welcome and golfers are carefully grouped prior to each event.

Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire
A classy parkland in Hertfordshire that is a fixture in the English Top 100. Beautifully conditioned and playable for all.
The deal: Ashridge offer societies a choice of packages, the most popular being tea/coffee, a bacon roll and 18 holes, followed by a two-course lunch. Prices from £113 to £133p.

Blackmoor
Bordon, Hampshire
A very fun, high-quality heathland layout. Magnificent views from the clubhouse balcony and fabulous food on offer.

Blackwell
Bromsgrove, Worcestershire
A wonderful course complete with a charming old clubhouse boasting one of the best wine cellars in British golf. The 1st tee is likely to be one of the closest to the clubhouse you’ll ever see.
The deal: A typical offer is tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes and a two-course meal for £125pp in the summer.

Broadstone
Bournemouth, Dorset
A GB&I Top 100 entry for many years, the Frank Pont revision of a Harry Colt classic has been a huge success. Dramatic heathland terrain used superbly and a club that opens its arms to you.
The deal: Broadstone tailor packages to individual groups outside of winter… but their winter package is superb: a full English breakfast, 18 holes, tea and cake or a beer and crisps for £90pp, November and March.

Burnham & Berrow
Burnham, Somerset
A World Top 100-calibre links and a welcoming club equals a wonderful venue for visitors. One of the best starts to a course in GB&I, in superb condition all year round.
The deal: A round on the Championship course for £150pp, with tea/coffee and breakfast roll for £9.50 and a two-course meal for £22.50 – £182pp in total.

Cavendish
Buxton, Derbyshire
Well known now as an Alister MacKenzie masterpiece, Cavendish is not penal off the tee and is fun around the greens. It’s bewilderingly good value and one of the most fun golf courses in Britain and Ireland.
The deal: A group of 12 pays £40pp as a green fee in the week and £50 at weekends. Add in tea/coffee and a bacon or sausage bap for an extra £6, full English for £10.50, soup and sandwiches for £7.50 and a two-course evening meal for £16.

Conwy
Conwy, north Wales
A stunning location with a fair and easy-walking all-year-round course. Good food in a welcoming clubhouse. Truly sensational value for a Curtis Cup venue.
The deal: Tea/coffee and bacon roll and a one-course meal plus 18 holes for £105pp, 12+ golfers, 9.30-11.30am.

Delamere Forest
Delamere, Cheshire
An undulating heathland that has never been in better condition. Not the easiest course in this 100 but not unduly unforgiving and a class act both on and off the course.
The deal: Group bookings for 12+ available midweek are £125pp, including green fee, tea/ coffee, bacon roll and a two-course meal.

Enville
Stourbridge, West Midlands
Home to two superb heathy courses that stay in great nick all year round. The Highgate is No.109 in our England Top 200, the Lodge No.135. That illustrates how good they both are.
The deal: Tea/coffee, a bacon roll, 18 holes and a two-course meal costs £120pp. Add £2 more to swap to a full English breakfast. Lunch and 18 holes after 3pm is £99pp.

Fraserburgh
Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Some of the best links land in Britain at this Top 100 Scotland fixture. And this is one of the best deals in this list. Get yourself up to Aberdeen and enjoy!
The deal: Twelve+ players can play for a bargain £50pp, with bacon roll for £6 and soup and sandwiches for £7.50. Set menus from £13 (one course) to £21 (three).

Isle of Purbeck
Swanage, Dorset
“Always a pleasure to visit, with such wonderful views over Brownsea Island towards Poole,” says one panelist. “Great food, good value and a very warm welcome.”
The deal: For a group of 12, green fees range from £65-£90pp (morning) to £40-£50 after 2pm. Food options include a one-course meal for £13.50, one round of sandwiches and chips for £11, and tea/coffee and a bacon roll for £7.

Kington
Kington, Herefordshire
Number 61 in the England Top 100 illustrates Kington’s quality and why the deal below is utterly incredible value. And they really do want you to visit their fine club and play their fabulous course.
The deal: Unlimited golf, tea/coffee and a bacon roll on arrival plus a one-course meal afterwards for £41pp. A full breakfast beforehand ups that to £46. Parties of 15 or more, the organizer plays and eats for free.

Liphook
Liphook, Hampshire
Exquisite heathland that is now a fixture in the GB&I Top 100. No pushover but it needs more brain than brawn.
The deal: Two-course lunch and 18 holes for £134pp in the summer. That’s the 2024 deal so it may change for 2025… because Liphook are full up for this year. Get planning!

Little Aston
Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
“Bags of character on and off course with delicious food on offer,” says one panelist. One of the best and most beautiful putting greens you will ever see. No better place to arrange a pre-game putting competition.
The deal: A three-course meal for £25pp, added to £150pp a round May-September, except August, when it falls to £105.

Old Thorns
Liphook, Hampshire
A wonderful all-round venue that is established in the middle of our GB&I Top 100 Resorts list. A terrific woodland course that is England Top 200 quality. Offers incredible value in their society deals.
The deal: Tea/coffee and a bacon roll, 18 holes and a two-course meal from £75pp. Organizer goes free, minimum 12 golfers.

Prestbury
Macclesfield, Cheshire
An England Top 100 course and a super club. “A rare combination of a wonderful course, superb clubhouse, great food and very welcoming management and staff,” says one panelist.
The deal: Their key society day is Thursday, when tea/coffee, a bacon roll, 18 holes at a society rate and a two-course meal is available from £60pp.

Prince’s
Sandwich, Kent
Offering the complete society package: 27 holes of wonderful links golf, delicious food, fantastic accommodation and a warm welcome in the attractive clubhouse. Among the top courses in Kent.
The deal: The club arrange bespoke day deals for groups in the summer but as a guide, their play-and-stay package is one night’s accommodation, two rounds, breakfast, a course guide and a two-course dinner for £295pp (was £185 November 2023-February 2024).

North Hants
Fleet, Hampshire
“Perfect attention to detail on and before the day of our visit. A very attractive modern clubhouse to relax in following your game,” says one panelist. A very pretty and peaceful course that is England Top 100 caliber.
The deal: On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, golfers get tea/coffee and a bacon roll, 18 holes followed by a three-course meal for a very agreeable £135.

Royal Ashdown Forest
Forest Row, Sussex
This might well be the best deal in the whole ranking. It breaks the £100pp mark but to get a GB&I-calibre course, breakfast on arrival and lunch afterward is superb value for money. It’s also just £77 in the winter – and RAF winters very well!
The deal: Tea/coffee and a bacon roll, 18 holes on the Old followed by a one-course meal for £124pp. Minimum of eight golfers.

Royal St David’s
Harlech, west coast of Wales
A GB&I Top 100 fixture and one of Britain’s best links, with drama and pedigree in spades. Undoubtedly a demanding course but a real treat – and great savings for group bookings.
The deal: Green fees are £90pp (a £30 saving) for 12+, with lunch £7-8pp.

Silloth on Solway
Silloth, Cumbria
Sensational value for a World Top 100-caliber links. Add in typically warm Cumbrian hospitality for a top-tier entry.
The deal: Summer-round package for tea/coffee, breakfast roll, golf and a two-course meal is £119pp.

Southerness
Dumfries, Dumfriesshire
One of Scotland’s great links and a club that really wants to host you. Fantastic value in their deals.
The deal: Groups of 20 or more golfers can play the course from £70pp (saving £20pp on the standard fee). Tea/coffee and a bacon roll, plus golf for £90. Soup and sandwiches and golf for £91pp. Golf and a two-course meal for £98pp. Soup and sandwiches and golf plus a two-course meal for £102pp.

The London Club
Brands Hatch, Kent
The International has hosted the Volvo World Match Play, Regional Open Qualifying and the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship. It is a majestic downland course with risk-reward holes and memorable moments guaranteed. Their events team are highly experienced and dedicated to making your day run perfectly.
The deal: Twilight offer from April to September after 3pm, from £95pp.

Thorpeness
Thorpeness, Suffolk
A quite superb Suffolk heathland with bags of character and a greenkeeper taking it to new levels. Magnificent year-round condition makes the March deal exceptional. A very, very well-run golf club and hotel.
The deal: Eighteen holes, tea/coffee with a bacon roll and one-course lunch after play. Minimum 12 players, April to October, from £56pp (£47pp November to March).

Woburn
Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire
The three courses here need little introduction so we will use the space to say two things. Firstly, Woburn does an exceptional job of taking care of visitors. And secondly, the green fee here is ordinarily £225, so the two-round deal below is clearly magnificent value.
The deal: Breakfast roll on arrival, 18 holes and a two-course lunch: £245pp, Mon-Thurs. Add an extra round in the afternoon: £365pp.

Brampton

An hour from Newcastle and about two from Glasgow and Manchester, this should be on a lot of golfers’ radars. Packed with entertaining holes and drains superbly. Fun is guaranteed, as is the warmth of the welcome.

Canterbury

Number 12 in our highly competitive Kent ranking, this mature parkland by Harry Colt is a connoisseur’s delight. Super condition and a warm welcome.

Dorset G&CC

Superb woodland-heathland course on the city’s outskirts – and Dorset’s deals illustrate how keen they are to host you. This GB&I Top 100 Resorts entry is very impressive in every respect.
The deal: Tea/coffee and bacon baguette on arrival, nine holes on the Woodland course, lunch, 18 holes on the Lakeland/Parkland. Weekdays it’s £68.50pp, weekends £79.50. Add a two-course dinner to finish for an extra £17.95pp.

Duff House Royal
Banff, Aberdeenshire
Playable, well-presented Alister MacKenzie parkland course… and just look at these enticing prices.

Dunstanburgh Castle

A lovely, fun links and wonderful food in a very popular and quaint wooden café setting, not to mention good value.

Formerly Hatfield London, this is a quality venue with real value for money, given its pedigree. The Old was designed by Fred Hawtree in the ’70s and is a tree-lined parkland, while the New is peppered with drama.

Foxhills
Chertsey, Surrey
Two courses that are Top 100 England caliber, but there is a lot more to this venue than that, as its high position in our GB&I Resorts ranking shows.

Hampton Court Palace
Kingston, Surrey
“A fabulous course – we like to visit in the springtime when the rough is not too deep,” says one panelist. A gem of a course in London that received numerous nominations from the panel. Superb value.

Kilmacolm

Moor Park

The Bradford
Guiseley, Yorkshire
“Fantastic value for such a well-respected course,” says one panellist. “Possibly the most food we’ve ever been served at dinner, but all of the highest quality. Very welcoming, too!” Herbert Fowler heathland that enjoys views towards the Aire Valley.
The deal: £80pp until 31st October for a light lunch, 18 holes and a two-course dinner. You’ll also receive a discount voucher for a future fourball.

Stockport
Stockport, Lancashire
An England Top 100 course that is in wonderful condition, and an extremely welcoming club.
The deal: The society rate for the summer is £80pp. A bacon roll or sandwich on arrival with tea/coffee, then a two-course meal afterward, is £30pp.

Worksop
Worksop, Nottinghamshire
Set in heathy woodland on the boundary of the National Trust’s Clumber Park and Sherwood Forest. Natural sand and gravel subsoils mean it is a year-round triumph.
The deal: Green fee is £60pp for at least 12. Tea/coffee and a bacon roll is an extra £5, a one-course meal is £12, two courses for £15.

Yelverton
Plymouth, Devon
“Old World charm and a very warm welcome,” says one panelist. Yelverton is a fun and unique course that is an England Top 100 contender. Exceptional value, too.

“This attractive layout often goes under the radar, despite having made large strides in recent years in terms of conditioning, quality of greens and a complete bunker renovation,” says one panelist. The refurbished clubhouse offers excellent food and course views.

Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth, west coast of Wales
This Wales Top-50 course has stunning views over Cardigan Bay and from Snowdonia and the Llyn Peninsula to the Preseli Mountains. Designed by six-time Open champion Harry Vardon.

Bramshaw
Lyndhurst, Hampshire
There are 36 exquisite holes here, set in the New Forest, and a dedicated event coordinator to manage your event. The Forest is the original, a heathy-woodland that dates back to the 1860s and one of the best value courses in Britain. The Manor, which ends between mature woodland, opened in 1971.
The deal: It’s £75pp for tea/coffee, a breakfast roll, 18 holes on the Manor and a one-course meal afterward. The organizer goes free on bookings of 12 or more. It is £40pp for the same on the Forest.

Burghley Park
Stamford, Lincolnshire
“The golf course always holds up well for our autumn event, suits all abilities of golfer and the staff are fantastic,” says one very happy panelist. All that and it’s very conveniently placed, just off the A1.
The deal: Playing after 12pm during the week, you’ll pay £53.95pp for 18 holes and

Chiltern Forest

Dartmouth G&CC
Blackawton, Devon
GB&I Top 100 Resort fixture in the Devon countryside that has two courses: the Championship and Dartmouth. Offers a host of packages and super service.
The deal: Bacon roll plus tea/coffee and 18 holes on the Championship course is £35pp midweek. Add a one-course meal and it is £45pp. Minimum of eight golfers.

Farleigh
Warlingham, Surrey
Opened in 1997, this downland-style course has 27 holes designed by John Jacobs that are packed with variety thanks to three distinctive nine-hole loops.

Kingsdown
Corsham, Wiltshire
This is Wiltshire’s oldest golf club and from the firm fairways of its downland course you enjoy expansive views across the valley into Bath. Always welcoming and offers year-round golf.

Moor Hall
Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
Set on the north-eastern outskirts of Birmingham, this parkland was initially set down in 1932 by Hawtree and Taylor but was refreshed by Mackenzie & Ebert as recently as 2020.
The deal: It’s £70pp for 12-24 players to play 18, and just £10 more for 27 holes. Full English breakfast is £9.75, while a two-course meal is £19.

Nefyn & District
Pwllheli, north Wales
An epic setting makes this a bucket-lister, but also consider the exceptional value for money on offer here – you feel it should be 50% more expensive for what you get. And that is a very good sign. You’re guaranteed a very warm welcome, too.
The deal: Parties of 12 or more during the week get the green fee dropped from £65pp to £58. Then you can add in a variety of catering options, all using local produce. 

North Shore
Skegness, Lincolnshire
This part parkland, part links course in Skegness has a hotel attached and has been in every one of our GB&I Resorts Top 100s. You want value? North Shore offers exceptional levels.

A golf hotel set among the picturesque hills of Watership Down, it boasts three aptly-named nine-hole loops: The Woods, The Lakes and The Park. Temporary greens are never in use here.

A fine tree-lined parkland designed by Harry Vardon and revised by James Braid and Harry Colt. Noted for its superb greens and par 4s.
The deal: Play 18 holes for £40pp Monday to Friday, then add in tea/coffee and a bacon roll for £6, full English for £10 and soup and sandwiches for £7.50. A buffet is available for £25pp.

Trentham
Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
A great day for societies, with exceptional food, a comfortable clubhouse and a superb recent bunker renovation to admire at this impressive parkland layout.
The deal: The golf is £75pp, food from £12-18 depending on the choice of meal. Tea/coffee and bacon roll on arrival costs £8.

Westerham
Sevenoaks, Kent
“Gorgeous course, quality greens, quality clubhouse, easily accessible and always friendly,” says one panelist. The woodland course is punctuated by water features and has been built to USGA specification.

This 36-hole complex – a GB&I Top 100 Resort – is made up of The Lakes and The Woods, offering differing experiences. “A well-maintained course, good for large groups and easy to reach from all parts of the country,” says one panelist.
The deal: Tea/coffee and a bacon roll plus 18 holes and a one- (£61.50pp), two- (£65.50) or three-course (£69.50) meal from the society menu. With a chef’s sandwich selection and chips instead, it is £56.50pp.

Bletchingley
Redhill, Surrey
Being situated on the sand ridge that runs parallel to the North Downs is the reason Bletchingley can justifiably boast of being “The No.1 draining course in the area”. Great views from various points.

Bridlington Belvedere

Crane Valley

It’s a short course so gives all players a chance of a good round and a good day out,” says one panelist. Laid out by James Braid in 1919, it was upgraded by Donald Steel in the 1990s. Some short and drivable par 4s ramp up the fun.

Heacham Manor
Hunstanton, Norfolk
A beautiful seaside course on the North Norfolk coast, with wide fairways and dramatic holes. Part of a super resort that is in our GB&I Top 100 Resorts and which boasts one of the most comprehensive clubhouses in this list.
The deal: Tea/coffee and a bacon roll, 18 holes and a two-course meal from £41.95pp.

Hawick
Hawick, Scottish Borders
A little on the hilly side so some may prefer to take a buggy, but the course is fun and the food and welcome are even better.
The deal: Normal green fee is £45pp, but for large parties, this can be lowered to as little as £30. A new caterer is imminent so prices are not available at time of print.

Henllys

Kirkby has matured nicely since being established in 1991 in 160 acres of parkland in the Lune Valley. It crosses Barbon Beck on the front nine then climbs to reveal spectacular views of Howgill Fells.

Longridge
Longridge, Lancashire
A lovely course with a superb selection of society deals.

Lyme Regis
Lyme Regis, Dorset
Great value packages for groups on this lovely clifftop course, founded in 1893. This is a club that really wants your society to visit. Expect great golf, welcome and food.

Murrayfield
Edinburgh, Lothian
A parkland-heathland layout with some entertaining green complexes and memorable holes that enjoys tranquility despite being close to Edinburgh city centre.

Olton

Prestatyn
Prestatyn, north Wales
A cracking 18th and a lovely set of par 3s characterize this fine coastal course. Founded in 1905 but with a very modern outlook to value and service.
The deal: Parties of 12+ (Mon-Thurs) see the green fee drop to £40 from £45pp. Add in a bacon roll with tea/coffee for £6, and a one-course meal for £12, making it £58.

Rothley Park
Rothley, Leicestershire
Leicestershire’s No.1 course in our rankings was founded in 1911 and is a mature parkland that is beautifully presented. It’s so popular that their society slots are taken up for 2024, so get planning for 2025…

The Shire London

Seve’s only UK design bursts with variety across its six par 3s, par4s and par 5s. Drama lurks in water-defended tests and there is a super level of conditioning. Suits all abilities
The deal: It’s £116pp for 18 holes on the Ballesteros course, a private reception room for registration and dining, tea/coffee plus bacon roll on arrival and a two-course meal, midweek only. Nine more holes is £40pp.

The Springs
Wallingford, Oxfordshire
“A rather interesting, attractively bunkered course with a warm welcome. One of the best clubhouses around to unwind in afterward, and fabulous food,” says one panelist. It offers superb packages.

Quite short at around 5,000 yards, but the enjoyment levels are so high that you don’t notice. Breathtaking scenery on this GB&I Fun Top 100 entry.

Woll
Selkirk, Scottish Borders
A relatively new course (with on-site accommodation) that has very forward-thinking management. The parkland course is very playable and nicely maintained, with the 17th, its green surrounded by water, an absolute thrill coming home.
