A significant rise, as the highest new entry of our 2008 ranking beds in, and more panellists play it. The seventh course to open in St Andrews did so to great fanfare in June 2008. The hype was understandable – it was the first championship course to be built in the town for almost century. The hype was also justified. The Castle leaped into our Top 100 at No.67 after immediately thrilling our judges with its delicious slice of dramatic clifftop links. David McLay Kidd made a terrific job of shaping the fairly featureless farmland into a thrilling course. It is hard to find a poor hole on this modern championship links, though many dislike the sloping greens. If you can see past those, you’ll love it.
