What’s In The Bag: Shane Lowry

What’s in the bag of six-time European tour winner and Major champion Shane Lowry? Today’s Golfer reviews what’s in the bag.

Lowry has enjoyed a fantastic few years, winning his first Major title at the 2019 Open at Royal Portrush and making a real impact on his Ryder Cup debut despite Europe’s defeat at Whistling Straits in 2021.

Today's Golfer What's In The Bag is brought to you in association with Callaway Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X golf balls.

Now the Irishman has added the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship title, to an impressive CV that includes multiple wins on the European Tour and PGA Tour titles at the 2015 WGC Bridgestone International and 2024 Zurich Classic alongside Rory McIlroy.

Shane Lowry lifts the trophy after winning the BMW PGA Championship.

His single-shot victory over good friend Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup teammate Jon Rahm at Wentworth lifted the 36-year-old back inside the world’s top 15 and capped a superb season. The BMW PGA was also the first qualification event for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Despite no further wins in 2023 however, Lowry’s steady form saw him finish ninth on the World Points List and 11th on the European Points List, which combined with his prolific team experience, earned him selection for a second Ryder Cup as one of Luke Donald’s picks.

Lowry also boasts an impressive record in Major championships recording a T2 finish at the US Open, T3 at the PGA Championship, and T4 in the Masters, in addition to his 2019 Open win.

Shane Lowry won The Open in 2019.

Lowry is a Srixon/Cleveland staff player but, like many players, isn’t tied into a full-bag contract, allowing him to play TaylorMade Fairway Wood and putter.

Like fellow Major champions Brooks Koepka and Hideki Matsuyama, Lowry uses Srixon irons (ZX5 MKII and ZX7 MKII). He has been a long-time user of Cleveland wedges and currently plays the RTX-6 ZipCore model, which we’re huge fans of here at TG.

Let’s take a closer look at the golfer equipment used by six-time DP World Tour winner Shane Lowry.

What driver does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses a Srixon ZX5 MKII LS driver (9.5°) with a Mitsubishi Diamana White 70 X shaft

The Irishman opts for the low-spinning Srixon ZX5 MKII LS driver head. Lowry has played with Srixon drivers for some time as part of his contract but they are definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new driver.

What fairway wood does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses a TaylorMade Stealth Plus fairway wood (19°) with a Graphite Design Tour AD-DI 8X shaft

Lowry sticks with what works for him and has therefore kept TaylorMade's older Stealth Plus 5-wood in the bag over the more recent Qi10 series of fairway woods. The Irishman replaced his TaylorMade M5 5-wood with the Stealth Plus he has playing at 19°.

What utility does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses a Srixon ZX MKII utility iron (20°) with a Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 120 X shaft

Price: £209.00 / $239.99
To bridge the gap between his irons and fairway wood, Lowry slots in a Srixon ZX MKII utility iron that is very closely lofted to his 19° 5-wood but he's able to play different shots with his 20° utility club.

What irons does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses Srixon ZX5 MKII (4-5) and ZX7 MKII (6-PW) irons with KBS Tour 130 X shafts

Price: £899.00 / $1,199.99
Lowry opts for a combo set of Srixon irons, starting with the ZX5 MKII in a 4 and 5-iron. From 6-iron to pitching wedge the 2019 Open Champion opts for the less forgiving ZX7 MKII irons.

What wedges does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore wedges (50°, 54, and 58°) with KBS Tour Wedge X shafts

The latest version in Celevaland's RTX range of wedges are their RTX 6 ZipCore wedges, of which, Lowry has three in the bag - a complete set including a 50°, 54°, and 58°.

What putter does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses a TaylorMade Spider Tour Z putter

Lowry is probably best known for wielding an Odyssey 2-ball putter, but he took it out of the bag before competing in the 2024 Zurich Classic for the TaylorMade Spider Tour Z.

Spiders are the best TaylorMade putters ever made, and they’ve reached a level where some models now have a legacy and genuine cult following.

There are four current models, but the Spider Tour Z Lowry uses is one of the two newest models that have been added to the Spider family of TaylorMade putters.

What golf ball does Shane Lowry use?

Shane Lowry uses a Srixon Z-Star XV golf ball

Rrp: $49.99

Price: $39.90
The firmer XV is for 100+mph swing speeds and is played on tour by Hideki Matsuyama, Shane Lowry, Keegan Bradley, and Lucas Glover.

The 2023 model has a new three-piece construction, and it’s designed to fly higher and further than the standard Z-Star. Srixon like to say if your birdies start with a big tee shot then this is probably the ball for you.

Compared to the Z-Star Diamond the XV generates a little less mid-iron and wedge spin, but is also a little longer from the tee.
