Who is Ludvig Aberg?

Settling quietly into life as a professional was never on Ludvig Aberg’s agenda. But who exactly is the Swedish golf sensation, and what do you need to know about him?

All the key facts about European golf sensation Ludvig Aberg…

1. First things first, Ludvig’s surname is perhaps not as obvious to pronounce as you might expect (unless you are a Swedish native of course!) We are reliably informed that in the Swedish alphabet, a small circle above the ‘Å’ (as you will see when written accurately) is pronounced “oar” – who knew!

2. Aberg is from a small town in the southwest of Sweden called Eslov, a 30-minute drive from Malmo. The town has a population of less than 20,000 people but does boast a scenic golf course, Eslov Golf Club, where Aberg learned his trade.

3. Ludvig has two Swedish Golf Tour wins to his name, both coming within a fortnight of each other in July 2020.

4. Aberg attended Texas Tech University, representing the Red Raiders Golf Team. He finished No.1 in the 2023 PGA Tour University Rankings which earned him membership for the remainder of the season and the 2024 season. He is only the second two-time winner of the Ben Hogan Award for the best player in the United States (the other being a certain Jon Rahm).

5. Whilst still competing as an amateur, Aberg was offered a two-year contract worth $2.5 million by LIV Golf, which the Swede subsequently turned down to pursue a career on the PGA Tour.

7. Aberg made his professional PGA Tour debut at the RBC Canadian Open in June 2023 where he finished T25, and recorded his first top 10 finish (T4) a month later at the John Deere Classic with a final round 63.

8. Just 75 days after turning professional, Aberg lifted his first professional silverware in his sixth DP World Tour event at the 2023 Omega European Masters. The win secured him a check for $450,000 and more importantly, catapulted the Scandinavian golfer into Ryder Cup contention.

9. Less than 24 hours after his Omega Europan Masters triumph, Aberg was named as one of Luke Donald’s six Captain’s Picks, labeling Ludvig a ‘generational talent’ in the process. In being selected, Aberg will be the first Ryder Cup player in history to have never played in a Major championship.

10. During a Team Europe practice day at the Marco Simone Golf Club, Aberg partnered fellow Scandinavian Viktor Hovland to a 3&2 victory over Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, after which McIlroy declared himself ‘firmly at the front of the Aberg bandwagon’.

11. Aberg’s strong form continued at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth where all 12 of Luke Donald’s team competed. Aberg held a two-shot lead after 54 holes, eventually going on to finish in a tie for 10th.

12. Ludvig’s statistics since turning professional suggest the Swede tops Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler for ‘Strokes Gained’ off the tee and has a longest registered drive of 376 yards.

13. A caddie called Jack Clark has been on Aberg’s bag for most of his ventures in the professional game to date. A proficient golfer himself, Clark has caddied on winning European Solheim Cup teams at Gleneagles in 2019 and Ohio in 2021.

14. Aberg is a big soccer fan and supporter of Liverpool FC. He grew up playing as a central midfielder before turning his attention to golf at the age of 13.

15. When not traveling on tour, Aberg resides in Lubbock, Texas, where he went to University.
