Golf’s magnificent seven volunteers

The England Golf Partnership (EGP) this week celebrated the golf volunteers whose passion and generosity are inspiring others to take up and enjoy the sport.

Seven prestigious volunteer awards were made during the 2011 County Golf Development Conference dinner, held at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire (22-23 February, 2011).

The winners were applauded by a packed conference hall made up of those leading the EGP’s vision to ‘Grow the Game’ through the County Golf Partnership structure.

Phillip Beard, Volunteer Manager for the England Golf Partnership, said: “All our winners tonight are very special people who share hugely inspiring stories. Beginner players and returning players, so crucial to the game, would not develop and thrive without the volunteers who sacrifice so much of their time to help in our County Golf Partnerships. The volunteer role is becoming ever-more important as we grow the game.”

The celebrated heroes get their reward:

Jack Thornton (Lancashire) – Young Golf Volunteer of the year under 18.

Helen Tang (East London) – Golf Volunteer of the year 18 – 25.

Judith Thornell (Shropshire and Herefordshire) – Golf Volunteer Coach of the year.

Jenny May (Gloucestershire) – County Development award.

John Wilson (Sussex) – Services to Golf/Lifetime Achievement (male).

Margaret Gliddon (Somerset) – Services to Golf/Lifetime Achievement (female).

The national volunteering programme is delivered via the England Golf Partnership’s ‘Whole Sport Plan’ for golf and is an integral part of the England Golf Partnership’s vision to ‘Grow the Game’.
