Here are another half-a-dozen not-so-familiar – ‘unsung heroes’ if you like – which will nevertheless provide you with a golfing outing to remember. For all the right reasons…

*Wokefield Park, Berkshire  (pictured) – A challenging but fair course although it’s a wise move to make sure your golf bag is topped with plenty of ammunition as you can easily lose loads of balls here…there’s not only lots of water hazards but the rough can be knee high in places too.

*Sleaford, Lincs – Sleaford is something of a rarity. It’s an inland links and is flat and easy-walking. It’s also based on sand so is fast-draining and therefore nearly always open. There’s even a number of pot bunkers to negotiate…

*Lyme Regis, Dorset – A clifftop cracker and you’ll probably best remember your round for the breathtaking coastal views – run close by the dramatic par 4 16th which runs perilously close to the cliff edge

*Thornbury, Bristol – A reasonable test of golf for the average golfer though it’s not the most challenging for low handicappers. Having said that, there’s some deep rough, lurking not too far away from the fairways, you’ve got to be wary of.

*Brampton Heath, Northants – The course has a good mixture of interesting holes and is maturing well with the gorse getting thicker very year. It’s a well-drained location and copes well in all weathers.

*Duns, Scottish Borders – A gentle upland course with lovely views of the Cheviot hills into England. But there are a few testing holes – two par 5s, the 2nd where accuracy off the tee is crucial and the long uphill 6th, in particular.
