Here’s another smashing six 2-FORE!-1 courses which do 2-FORE!-1 Golf proud – and ensure you get a great game at a great price. This week’s venues range from the quirky Scottish links of Cullen to the inland beauty of Cumbrian cracker Kirkby Lonsdale.
*Cottrell Park, South Glamorgan (pictured right) – Cottrell has two 18 hole courses with the Button Gwinnett layout being named after the Button family who resided there in the 17th century. Button Gwinnett was one of the 56 men men who assembled at Philadelphia in 1776 to sign the American Declaration of Independence!
*Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria – Set between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, Kirkby Lonsdale offers natural undulating terrain, dramatic views and a great combination of holes.
*Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbys – As you approach the foothills of the Pennines you could be excused for thinking a hard slog is around the corner. But in reality the course nestles in a valley and is built on gentle rolling parkland surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the Peak District.
*The Mendip, Somerset – This hidden gem can be found on the North slope of the Mendips, the highest point being on the 3rd hole which is nearly 1,000 feet above sea level. On a clear day you’re blessed with unparalleled views over seven counties, including the Welsh mountains and Glastonbury Tor.
*Park Hill, Leics – Plotted within 180 acres of tranquil countryside, is a modern layout built to USGA specifications and is very often open for play when neighbouring courses are forced to shut up ‘shop.’
*Cullen, Aberdeenshire – This mini-masterpiece of a links should be taken seriously despite its obvious lack of length. Naturally there’s the wind factor to consider, the outward nine of the Old Tom Morris-designed layout running close to the cliffs with the reverse nine playing back at beach level.
