Callaway Launch X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood

Callaway have unveiled their new X Hot 3Deep fairway wood and it has already revolutionised Phil Mickelson’s bag, with his caddy Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay calling it “the most meaningful club that Phil has ever put in play.”

The new fairway is longer at 43-inches, has a taller face – from 1.3 inches to 1.45 –  and has a sole with less camber. All these slight adaptations make the face deeper to broaden the club’s sweet spot and increases the face’s spring-like effect for more ball speed.

In other words, the X Hot 3Deep is more like a driver/fairway hybrid.

As Luke Williams, Callaway’s Senior Global Director of Woods and Irons says: “When we designed the X Hot fairway woods, we really wanted it to perform well in all conditions. So we wanted it to be good off the tee, but also a strong performer in the fairway and even a fairway wood that you could hit out of the rough.

“But we found over the years that many longer players tend to use their 3-wood almost exclusively off the tee, almost as a second driving club on holes where there might be trouble where they’d hit their driver, or on short par-4s where they are playing for position,”

“Those types of players tend to prefer a face that is a little bit deeper because they use it primarily off the tee.” With those golfers in mind, Callaway developed the X Hot 3Deep.

The reason Mickelson – who has been spotted playing a TaylorMade RBZ and Titleist 980f in the last few months – is so excited about his new 13-degree club, is because it is still long, but he can control the flight, choosing to keep the ball down or hit draws and fades.

The left-hander thought these qualities were especially important in 2013 where The Masters demands length off the tee, the US Open accuracy, and The Open at Muirfield the ability to hit a punch shot.
