Day One to America

First blood to the Americans then. After an enthralling day’s play, the Americans lead 5-3 after the end of the first day. And, actually, it could have been a whole lot worse for the Europeans. If the Belgian, Nicolas Colsaerts, hadn’t played out of his skin in his first ever match, Europe would be four points behind tonight.

“That was the best putting round I’ve ever seen,” said Tiger Woods about Colsaerts.
Davis Love was obviously pleased with the way things went, but warned against over confidence. “We came out a bit cold this morning. It wasn’t until half-way through the day that we got the crowd into things.”

Europe’s talisman, and world number one, Rory McIlroy, said the mood in the team room was far from downcast. “Things could have been a lot worse. Obviously, we would have liked to have done better. But, we have eight points to play for tomorrow, and we are only two behind; so we are still very much in it.”

“There are no excuses,” said Euro captain Jose Maria Olazabal. “We need to come out tomorrow and play better golf. It’s as simple as that.”

The foursomes pairings for tomorrow morning are…
7.20 Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson v Justin Rose and Ian Poulter
7.35 Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson v Lee Westwood and Luke Donald
7.50 Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson v Nicolas Colsaerts and Sergio Garcia
8.05 Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker v Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell
