This grand old club eight miles north of Dublin lies in its own sandy peninsula. The piece of land is two miles long and amounts to 500 acres, which gave Pickerman plenty of space to design. As a result of this scope, no two holes play in the same direction. Portmarnock is not spectacular, rather it is a player’s course, and is a favourite of Arnold Palmer – while Bernard Darwin knew “of no greater finish in the world”.
