51 – Golspie

The highest climber from our 2011 ranking is a mixture of heathland, parkland and links golf. Usually we’d prefer the links stretch but here we might just prefer the classy heathland holes which wouldn’t be out of place within a Surrey superstar.

52 – Turnberry (Kintyre)

Initially laid out by Philip Mackenzie Ross, the Kintyre was skilfully updated by Donald Steel and is a pleasant complement to the Ailsa.

53 – Crail (Balcomie)

It’s difficult not to love this historic course, which is attached to the 7th oldest golf club in the world. It feels as if more should be heard of Old Tom’s quirky wind-swept clifftop affair.

54 – Kilspindie

We love it here and recommend more golfers ink it into their East Lothian itinerary. Indeed, many of our panel would rather breeze round this short links than battle away at some of the area’s more recent, more muscular courses.

55 – Fraserburgh

A couple of our judges absolutely rave about Fraserburgh. Along with Aberdeenshire cousins Newburgh and Murcar it really ought to be better known.

56 – Tain

An interesting mix of heathland and links golf, Old Tom Morris created a typically cerebral challenge on the banks of the Dornoch Firth.

57 – Nairn Dunbar

Different in character from its linksy sister course across town, Nairn Dunbar is still a very enjoyable experience, especially when the gorse and myriad bushes are in bloom.

58 – Kilmarnock Barassie

Some say the new holes here have increased the quantity but lowered the quality. But the best links holes still exist and make Barassie worthy of its spot.

59 – Longniddry

If you arrive looking forward to another of East Lothian’s great links, you will be disappointed; it is only partly seaside in nature, but its parkland sections are arguably its best.

60 – West Kilbride

Seamill is best known for its Hydro Hotel, frequently a base for Jock Stein’s legendary Celtic FC team. It’s hard to imagine during their stays in Seamill, some of the iconic footballers didn’t play the terrific links on their doorstep.
